Street Division
The Street Division maintains, repairs and improves the City's street system to enable the safe and efficient travel of the motoring, pedestrian, and bicycling public. The City of Dallas is responsible for the maintenance of over 70 miles (118 lane miles) of paved streets, unimproved streets, alleys, 2000 signs, and 5 bridges. Maintenance and repair work includes paving and patching, crack sealing, street sweeping, street painting/marking, sidewalk and curb repair, mowing, maintaining right-of-way, rain gardens, and tree and brush trimming. Traffic signals, street lights, and larger bridge maintenance work are maintained with contractual services through other government agencies. Funding for the division is received through State and Federal gas tax allocations, with minor general fund support.
What is the “public right of way”?
Public right of way is a type of easement granted or reserved over the land for transportation purposes, which belongs to the city. Its purpose is to allow the city to build and maintain the street, curb and gutter, storm sewers, and underground utilities. This land is the responsibility of the landowner but the city has the right to determine what takes place there. A right of way may include curbs, sidewalks, and utilities and are areas where a utility (i.e., communications, gas, electric) has permission to enter a property to mark, construct, and maintain utility lines.
What is the “public utility” easements?
Public Utility Easements (PUE) are areas of property that were defined for use by utility companies when the property was first put on a plat. They are designed for overhead electric, telephone and cable lines, underground electric, water, sewer, storm, and gas lines. PUE’s are located behind the public right of way and are typically 10 feet wide.
